Steampunk Blue Lantern Pith Helmet by Windthin Steampunk Blue Lantern Pith Helmet by Windthin
One of my most ambitious projects to date.  It started with a pith helmet and an idea.  Originally I just wanted a pith helmet.  Then I wanted to do something more with it, and THEN.... I decided I wanted Blue Lantern Pith Helmet.  The Blue Lanterns personify hope, something I think the world needs more of now, and something that I feel is very emblematic of myself as well.

First I needed to figure out how to dye it.  I considered Rit dye, but soaking it in water concerned me.  So I did some searching and found Jacquard Dye-na-flow, an acrylic paint that acts like a dye, soaking in and leaving the material still flexible.  I couldn't decide between Azure or Cerulean at first.  I was going to go with Cerulean, but saw a good deal for some Azure on Amazon and picked some up as well, figuring I'd not likely see a deal that good again.  Turned out better than expected, instead of two bottles, I got six!  I was originally going to use the Cerulean as the primary color, but went with the Azure, since I had more of it, using the Cerulean to do accents.  This turned out even better, as now I had two colors to work with instead of one.

I blue-taped the top at first, and the rim, though I wound up taking off the rim tape when it became apparent that occasional spillage would happen; this was before I got better control over how to work with it.  I coated the body of the hat first, and then gave it a second coating.  Next, I did the top, rim, and band in Cerulean.  Next, I used blue tape on the band and an acrylic sealant to prepare it for the Liquid Brass accent.  A magic card helped to control the painting of the band in several places.  The brass paint seeped through the bottom layer of blue tape, so I made the middle two layers brass instead, using the card to protect the uppermost layer, and instead painted it in Cerulean afterwards.

The strap was a tough one.  I had a hard time finding parts.  The belt came from a thrift store.  It was too big to use the original buckles, so I used a pair of brass D-rings.  Four brads were painted with liquid brass and the original straps cut away, used only to attach the new belt to now.  I may yet add something to help hold the belt in place better, perhaps a brass stud, we'll see.  With the buckle, it can be un-done and turned around to act as a proper chin-strap; I originally tried to find some brass swivels to use to make that easier, but the ones I got sent were both way too big and NOT brass despite what the picture and site claimed.

The centerpiece was designed by the talented artist Miyuka: www.etsy.com/shop/Miyuka?ref=p…

It was a custom order I asked for without any backing, and she surprised me by sending along a second one, with backing, reversed!  Beautiful.  I wound up putting two pin backs on it and created the centerpiece by cutting a plastic embroidery frame to fit.  I had to snip a bit at the center of the frame, since it turned out that the position of the pins was just right, or wrong, so it wouldn't fit with the lattice properly until I did so.  I found some fabric similar to that of the hat in a nice dark blue and sewed it into place with two different stitch styles.  To suspend it, I used a very old connecting ring I picked up, some gold memory wire, copper German wire, crafted gold gears, and gold jewelry safety pins.

I will wind up adding some waterproofing, and may make some adjustments, but overall, this is the finished product, and I am very happy with it.  Check out some pictures below.

Also, I needed a new oath of my own:

In troubled days, in fearful night,
With strong hearts full, our souls ignite.
When all seems lost in the fight for right,
Look to each other, for hope burns bright!
