Description
I found this bumblebee lost and forlorn on the side patio at Ellwood House, a Victorian-era mansion here in DeKalb, Illinois, built by one Isaac Ellwood, one of the barbed-wire barons. It was having difficulty flying, I believe because of the high winds. I snapped some good pictures and carefully tried to help it on its way, finally depositing it safely among some bushes where it would not run the risk of being trampled.
Here our friend's journey ends, deposited safely on a nearby hedge where it can cling and ride out the high winds. You can really see the details of the fuzz, antennae, wings, legs, eyes, and head.
