Description
Though called 'stone', goldstone is actually a special type of glittering glass first invented in 17th century Venice by the Miotti family, who were granted an exclusive license to it by the Doge (roughly equivalent to a Duke). The most common variety takes its reddish-brown hue from tiny crystals of metallic copper formed under specific low-oxygen conditions. Cobalt is used to make blue goldstone, while green goldstone uses chromium oxides. There is also purple goldstone, which uses manganese.
This design uses blue and green faceted goldstone, a pair of blue goldstone scarab beads, gold-toned faceted beads, and a large blue goldstone ibis wrapped in blue and gold wire (I did the wrapping as well). The length is adjustable, and the bail on the pendent itself is large enough that it can be removed and worn separately if desired.
