Banquet in Yellow 38 (Honey Bee Soldier Beetles)

Description

I came upon this bank of beautiful yellow flowers beside a bike/nature path. Bumblebees and honey bees flitted among them, while bright orange bugs with black markings were mating on many. Smaller green bugs moved about on some. White butterflies drifted past, ants moved among the leaves... all told, they were very popular. I still haven't identified the orange-and-black or green bugs, but hope to.

UPDATE: So, I finally found out what these insects are: soldier beetles! Also known as leatherwings, they are highly desirable by gardeners because they eat grasshopper eggs, aphids, caterpillars and other soft bodied insects, most of which are pests. They're related to fireflies but don't produce any light themselves. They take their name from a common British species that is bright red, reminding people of the red coats of soldiers. It took a call to the NIU Biology Department's resident entomologist and giving her the address of my gallery to figure this one out.
